In the light of the recent conversion of the code of the Philippines from RP to PH / PHL (see, http://bit.ly/cvNFeA), I would like to express my preference for RP rather than PH / PHL.
I believe that the Republic of the Philippines is formal, historic and honorific of our revolutionary heroes. What better way to commemorate and share to other countries our republic-ity (a word I made intended to mean: being a republic) than to banner RP over pretty much everything?
I believe that the title 'republic' in the 'R' of 'RP' should not be dropped since it honors the graciously fallen heroes of our history. Our heroes and forefathers worked at the expense of their lives for our nation to be called the first republic in Asia. Thus, I believe dropping the 'republic' strips our nation of the everyday commemoration (with the display of RP in newspaper headlines and etc.) as the first republic in Asia.
I believe that the republic in RP is a celebration of our national democracy, so why strip it?
I believe that PH and PHL both sound odd. To me, PH sounds like pH or potential for Hydrogen, in the study of chemistry. PH also sounds like a hygiene product advertised on Philippine airwaves. On the other hand, I believe PHL sounds like a logistics company with colors of red and yellow.
"[The change of RP to PH / PHL] is in line with the Philippine membership with the ISO, as well as to avoid the ambiguity and confusion with the use of the initials RP." -http://bit.ly/cvNFeA
What really bothers me in the quote from the report cited above is to who are those confused over the use of the initials RP? Who in this country (to the exception of those who are unfortunately illiterate) would not know what RP meant?
Why would the Philippines consider international standards before considering its own people? Did the Department of Foreign Affairs ever consult the public regarding their proposed change from RP to PH / PHL?
So what if foreigners somehow ended up getting confused over RP? I get confused over their acronyms too. AFP means Agence France Presse but, also means Armed Forces of the Philippines.
.
We've been RP all these years, and I've never heard of a plane headed for the Philippines, but ended up some place else with an international code also like RP.
Am I overreacting? I think not. This is my point of view.
This is my preference. What is your say on this abrupt change?
